What is Extraction & Oral Surgery?

A simple extraction is done under local anaesthetic for erupted teeth, while impacted wisdom teeth need surgical extraction involving lifting the gum and sometimes sectioning the tooth. X-rays establish the relationship to the nerve and sinus beforehand.

Who is it suitable for?

  • Recurrent pain or infection around a wisdom tooth
  • A tooth too decayed to restore
  • A need for space before orthodontics
  • An impacted tooth pressing on its neighbours

How the session works, step by step

  1. Examination and panoramic or 3D imaging where needed
  2. Adequate local anaesthetic
  3. Simple or surgical extraction as the case requires
  4. Cleaning the socket and suturing where needed
  5. Post-extraction instructions and healing review

How to prepare

  • Tell your dentist about chronic conditions and blood thinners
  • Eat a light meal beforehand
  • Arrange someone to accompany you if having deeper sedation

After the session — what to expect

  • Bite on gauze to control bleeding
  • Avoid vigorous rinsing and drinking through a straw on the first day
  • Cold compresses to reduce swelling
  • Soft, cool foods in the first days

Cost and instalments

The cost of extraction & oral surgery varies with your case, the number of sessions and the plan your doctor sets, so an exact price cannot be given before a consultation. We explain the full cost after examination and before starting, and instalments are available through Tamara, Tabby and Emkan.

This page is general medical education and does not replace a consultation. Results vary between individuals, and a qualified doctor determines whether a procedure suits your case after an examination.

Extraction & Oral Surgery: frequently asked questions

Do wisdom teeth always need removing?

No. They are removed when there is an indication such as recurrent infection, decay or pressure on adjacent teeth.

How long does swelling last?

Swelling usually peaks in the first two days then subsides gradually.

What is dry socket?

A painful condition where the clot is lost from the extraction site. Following the instructions makes it much less likely.

When can I return to work?

Often the same or next day after a simple extraction; a surgical extraction may need a few days.
