The first trimester: what is reassuring and what needs review
The most anxious stage of pregnancy, and the one most filled with inaccurate information.
The first visit and when it happens
The first visit confirms the pregnancy and establishes its age and its location inside the uterus. Confirming location matters to rule out ectopic pregnancy, which needs prompt intervention when it occurs.
At this visit your medical history and current medication are reviewed. Some medications need adjusting or stopping, and some must continue because stopping is more dangerous than carrying on. Do not stop a long-term medication on your own when you learn you are pregnant; speak to your doctor.
Normal but unpleasant symptoms
Nausea, fatigue, breast tenderness and frequent urination are common and expected. Nausea usually peaks in the early weeks then eases gradually for most women.
First-trimester fatigue is real, not an exaggeration. The body is building the placenta and adapting to a major hormonal shift, and rest here is a medical need rather than a luxury.
Mild intermittent cramping without bleeding is also common and relates to the uterus expanding.
What needs immediate review
Vaginal bleeding, particularly if heavy or accompanied by pain.
Severe pain on one side of the lower abdomen, or pain with dizziness or shoulder pain, as these can indicate an ectopic pregnancy.
Severe vomiting preventing you keeping fluids down, because it leads to dehydration needing treatment rather than being simply bad nausea.
A high temperature or clear signs of infection.
Folic acid and why it starts early
Folic acid gives its greatest benefit in the very first weeks of fetal development, often before a woman knows she is pregnant. This is why it is advised from when you start trying, not from when pregnancy is confirmed.
The dose varies by case, and some women need a higher dose based on specific medical history, which is why your doctor sets it rather than leaving it to guesswork.
Common claims that need correcting
Diagnostic ultrasound is safe and used where there is a medical indication. There is no reason to refuse it out of fear.
Most women can continue moderate physical activity unless their doctor advises otherwise for a specific reason.
Moderate caffeine is permitted within limits your doctor sets; complete abstinence is not required in every case.
Most importantly, what circulates in group chats is no substitute for assessment of your own case. Every pregnancy is different.
