Laser hair removal in Riyadh: how many sessions do you actually need?

The question we're asked most. The honest answer isn't a fixed number, and here's what decides it.

Why there is no single answer

When someone asks how many sessions they need, any number given before an examination is a guess. The reason is simple: laser only affects hair currently in its active growth phase, and at any moment only a proportion of the hair in an area is in that phase while the rest is resting or shedding.

That proportion differs between areas of the same body. Facial hair has a shorter growth cycle than leg hair, which is why the intervals between sessions vary by area, and why one schedule cannot sensibly be applied to the whole body.

What determines the number

Hair colour and coarseness matter most. Dark, coarse hair absorbs energy efficiently, while light or fine hair responds more slowly and needs additional sessions.

Skin type determines the safe settings. Skin is classified on the Fitzpatrick scale, and darker skin needs a device and settings that respect the melanin in the skin itself, not only in the hair. This is what protects against burns and pigmentation.

Hormonal causes are often overlooked. Hirsutism linked to polycystic ovary syndrome or a thyroid disorder means hair keeps regenerating, and sessions will not deliver their expected result unless the underlying cause is treated alongside.

What 'not entirely permanent' means

The medically accurate phrase is permanent hair reduction, not permanent removal. Most people reach a point, after completing the protocol, where hair is substantially reduced and what remains is finer and lighter, then need a maintenance session periodically.

Anyone promising one hundred per cent permanent removal from a single session is selling a promise that the mechanism of laser itself does not support.

Mistakes that reduce your result

Plucking or waxing between sessions is the most common error. Removing the hair from its root means the laser has no target at the next session. Shaving is the only method permitted in between.

Sun exposure before a session raises melanin in the skin and forces the doctor to lower the energy to protect it, reducing the session's effectiveness. Two weeks away from sun and tanning before your appointment makes a genuine difference.

Delaying sessions past their scheduled date misses hair in its active growth phase, lengthening the whole protocol for no benefit.

What about Ramadan and fasting

Laser sessions do not affect fasting and do not break it, so they can be carried out during Ramadan without concern. The one practical piece of advice is to drink enough water after iftar the day before, as well-hydrated skin tolerates the session more comfortably.

Frequently asked questions

Is laser safe for darker skin?

Yes, with a suitable device, correct settings and a trained operator. Assessing skin type beforehand is essential, not a formality.

Should I shave before the session or leave the hair?

Shave the area beforehand. Long hair on the skin surface absorbs energy and causes discomfort without benefit.

Are the sessions painful?

Most people describe a quick prickling sensation alongside the cooling, and sensitivity varies between areas.
